Grand Illusion, Allietare Teil 1 und Allietare Teil 2

Punktladung: Genau am Freitag, 27. 11.,  als Bonnie Hunter den ersten Clue für ihren neuen Mystery Quilt veröffentlichte, wurde mein Grand Illusion Quilt fertig. 

Precise timing: exactly on Friday, November 27, when Bonnie Hunter released the first clue of her new mystery, I finished my Grand Illusion Quilt. Colour to brighten a dull and grey November day!

I'm particularly fond of the shirt neutrals (second from top in the two right columns). They are from outgrown shirts from my boys which they wore on special days in their life. The blue on white in the second colum from the right is from a leftover piece of fabric my sister used to sew a blouse for my mum. Feels good to include family memories!

More memories in the lower right corner: the blue fabric had a unhappy (because unworn) first life as boys' shirt (boy was too cool for proper shirts at that time), the flowery neutral is from the 1970s. I don't know what it was bought for, but my mum made a pantskirt for my doll out of tiny leftovers.

Eine Kollegin vermachte mir einige alte Hemden, als kleines Dankeschön (und Ermunterung, weiterhin alte Sachen an mich zu spenden ;-) ), nähte ich daraus diese Tasche für sie:

Jetzt also sind wir fast am Ziel angekommen. 
Erst mal ein ganz großes Dankeschön an Bonnie Hunter für die Zeit und die Energie, die sie in das Rätsel gesteckt hat und für lau zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Es war spannend, hat viel Spaß gemacht, ich habe viel dabei gelernt und freu mich auf den nächsten Rätselquilt!

 First, a HUGE thank you to Bonnie Hunter for the time and energy she has put into this mystery so thousands of quilters worldwide could join the fun for free! It was an exciting journey with tons of fun and loads of learning. Thank you soo much! I definitely will jump the train again.

So, und jetzt zum Quilt: 
Was mir an dem Muster total gefällt, sind die schwarzen -  bei mir braunen und leider nicht soo deutlichen -  Quadrate in der Einfassung, durch die sich Blöcke "Hand reichen". Wie bei Kontertänzen wo sich die Paare in der Mitte umeinander drehen und dann mit Hopsern und Hände reichen den Partner wechseln. In der äußeren Umrandung tummeln sich Gäste, die den Tänzern zuschauen.
Also heißt meine Decke nun "Kontertanz". (Oder Meryton Ball oder Netherfield Ball ;-D )

Now to the quilt: 
What first caught my eye were the black - my brown with unfortunately not so clearly visible effect - little squares in the sashing. An image of an old-fashioned English Country Dance popped up in my head, where dancers changed partners by taking hands and merrily hopping and jumping to their new positions while pairs in the middle row were forming a pinwheel. Can you see other guests in the outer pieced border who are watching the dancers and tapping their feet to the music? Oh, this quilt is full of music and laughter, ingenious!
I can't help myself but to call mine 'English Country Dance'. (Or 'The Meryton Ball' or 'Ball at Netherfield' ;-D ) 

Jetzt hätt ich ja grad noch Lust, sie noch einmal zu nähen, mit Regencyfarben. Neutral, gelb und pink in Pastelltönen für die Ladies. Braun, blau und türkis in rot und blau für die Uniformen der Soldaten und Gentlemen. Oder so ähnlich.  

  I really feel like doing it again in Regency themed colours: soft pastels for the ladies' dresses and red, navy and black for the gentlemen's coats and officers' uniforms. 


Aber! Das Muster und meine Farbauswahl - oh je.
Ich bin total froh, meinem Instinkt nachgegeben zu haben und meine eigenen Farben zu nehmen, denn obwohl Bonnie's Quilt wirklich total schön ist und bei ihr das Muster natürlich voll zur Geltung kommt, wäre es wirklich ganz und gar nichts für mich gewesen. Den Quilt hätte ich nicht benutzt und eingemottet oder verschenkt.
Mit meinen Farben allerdings kommt das Muster nicht so optimal zur Geltung.
Ich bin noch unentschlossen, wie ich weiter mache. 

But! The pattern and my colours - oh my.
I'm perfectly happy that I have listened to my instinct and chose my own colour way. As much as I love Bonnie's quilt, it really wouldn't have worked for me. I would't have used the quilt, it would lie sad and forgotten in a closet or I'd have given it away. Just not my colours.
Unfortunately my colours aren't working too well with the pattern.
I haven't decided yet how to go on.
 

  
Das Orignalmuster ist mir zu durcheinander, da geht alles drunter und drüber.
The original layout is too busy for me. Everything is topsy-turvy and I just can't see any pattern emerge.
 

Option Zwei - mein Favorit. Ich hatte sowieso gehofft, dass noch  mehr grün - für mich blau - dazu kommt. Also habe ich mal probiert, wie es aussieht, wenn ich die Mitte durch ein blaues Quadrat ersetze. Die Variante gefällt mir am besten. Das blau in der Mitte bringt den Wirbel und auch die diagonale Bewegung erst richtig raus. allerdings werde ich verschiedene blaue Stoffe nehmen, nicht nur einen wie in der Simulation.

Layout two - my favourite. I'd hoped for some more green to be used - blue for me. So I played with a solid blue square instead of the aqua and yellow four-patches. I think the blue is calming the mess but at the the same time brings the pinwheel and the black (brown) diagonal movement really into action. But I  intend to do it with various blue fabrics and not just one constant like in the mock up.

Variante Drei. Hier habe ich ausprobiert, wie es aussieht, wenn ich die Eckblöckchen mit dem gelben Quadrat nach innen drehe. Auch nicht schlecht, aber zu statisch und zu sehr auf die blaue Mitte konzentriert.
Option 3. Here I turned the corner blocks with the yellow square to the centre. Not bad either, but too static and too much emphasis on the blue centre squares and, most of all, no more 'handing over of the dance partners', so no thank you.

Grand Illusion Mystery Teil 3/ Part 3

 Teil 3 fand ich doof. Ich bin zwar fähig, Streifen gerade aneinander zu nähen, diese dann aber so zu bügeln, dass die Streifen auch gerade bleiben, übersteigt mein Können.
Von diesen Schwierigkeiten auf dem Weg zum Ziel abgesehen, gefallen mir meine Blöckchen auch nicht.
(Kein Jammern und Gemaule, nur eine Feststellung der Tatsachen.)
 Ich hoffe, dass sie sich einigermaßen harmonisch ins große Ganze einfügen und ich mich dann nur wundern kann, warum ich sie mal nicht mochte.

I didn't like part 3. I can sew together strips with an accurate straight seam, but keeping long strips straight when pressing is beyond me.
Apart from those difficulties of getting there, I don't like my units.(No whining, just stating the facts)
I hope that they will blend harmonically into the big picture and that then I'll wonder why I ever disliked them.

Da mir die 88" auf 88" von Bonnies Maßen für den fertigen Quilt zu breit sind, mache ich erst einmal 3/4 der angegebenen Blöcke. Im Fall der 'Slanted Diamonds' also 75.

I'm going for 3/4 of Bonnie's quilt size, so here are 75 'Slanted Diamond' blocks.

Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt Teil 1/ Part 1

 Seit Freitag ist der erste Teil des Gand Illusion Mystery Quilts von Bonnie Hunter online und heute bin ich mit meinen Blöckchen fertig geworden:

Bonnie Hunter Grand Illusion Mystery Quilt - Einführung/ Introduction

Die letzten Jahre habe ich bei den Mystery Quilts nur zugeschaut, diesmal bin ich dabei.
Im Oktober hat Bonnie das Farbschema veröffentlicht. 
Leider funktioniert die Kombination Gelb-Grün-Pink für mich überhaupt nicht. (Wenn ich dann sehe, was andere mit dem Farbschema zaubern, werde ich meinen Alleingang wahrscheinlich bereuen) 

Obwohl ich weder Gelb noch Pink besonders mag, habe ich das mir sympathische Grün rausgeschmissen und durch Mittel- bis Dunkelblau ersetzt. Das war dann wiederum zu nahe an Schwarz, also dafür dann Braun. Derzeit gefallen mir auch helle, weiße und cremige Hintergrundfarben nicht, also ist mein Neutral Grau und zwar durchgängig ein Stoff. Das Grau kann sich nicht so recht entscheiden, ob es warm oder kalt ist und deshalb meines Erachtens wunderbar geeignet, die anderen Farben zusammenzuhalten. Außerdem war es bei dem Stoff Liebe auf den ersten Blick.
Zu guter Letzt fand ich nur Pink auch doof und habe mich daher für einen Mix aus Pink und Orange entschieden. Mit dem grauen Hintergrund aus einem einzigen Stoff und dem eher zahmen Gelb wird der Quilt ein bisschen mehr Pepp an dieser Stelle hoffentlich gut vertragen.
Jetzt passt es für mich - ich kann es kaum erwarten, loszulegen.
Und hier sind meine Stoffe - tataaa:

The past years I only watched others having fun with the mystery quilts, this year I'm going to join in.
Unfortunately the colour combination yellow-green-pink doesn't work for me at all. (Chances are high that I'll regret my solo attempt when I'll see what magic others are performing with those colours).

Although I'm not too fond of yellow and pink I kicked out the green (which is actually a colour I like) and chose medium to dark blue instead. Now that was too close to black so here goes brown. 
Presently I don't like white, cream or other bright backgrounds, too, so it is grey and one constant piece of fabric. It is a grey with a slight brown undertone that can't decide if it's a warm or a cold  hue and therefore imho perfectly convenient to hold all colours together. Besides, it was love at first sight . 
Finally, just pink was ...well, sooo pink and I decided to break it up with orange.
Since I am on the calmer side with the one grey fabric and the rather tame yellow, hopefully a little bit more zing at this point will be ok.
Now it is right for me - can't wait to get started.
